Ganvie, the Venice of Africa (Benin)
Sublime Venice, mysterious Africa
A strange ethnical
mixture to qualify Ganvié, the only Benin lake-village. Ganvié is
located on the Nokoué Lake, in Benin. Its 20.000 inhabitants, since generations,
live essentially on the water, moving by pirogues. The aquatic villages, Ganvié
is the most important, are constitued by pile-dwellings. They defeat time, giving
the community all the infrastructures they need. People live as on the ground,
with their own organization: schools, shops and hotels. Ganvié or "Ganviénu",
was built at the beginning of the eighteenth century, it was transformed little
by little into a real ethnical community, even able of a total autarky. The inhabitants
of the villages live mainly of fishing and black market, which they have very
well developped since their departure from Nigeria. We have been guided by William,
through this photographic trip. He took us around introducing this sublime and
mysterious world, where walking becomes quite surrelalistic.
